If you have a look at the current position of DC comics and the content that it is putting out be it Comic books, animated movies, TV shows, video games, or whatever else they are making you would believe that it is basically a brand of Batman & Others, while the recent Wonder Woman movie (that is by the way first movie ever for a 75 year old character) has given some of long due spotlight to her, the fact remains that in last decade DC Comics has become so focused on The Dark Knight that the Superhero that started it all in Action Comic #1 in June 1938 i.e. Superman has been forced to take a backseat. It is not just that publishers are doing it on purpose why would they want one of their very few truly great characters to suffer? Fans (haters?) are too responsible for shifting the focus off superman as they regularly moan, complain, & criticize dear old Supes. So let me quash some of the criticism that is being thrown towards Superman and remind you all why he is awesome.
The current criticism of Superman is that being just good is not good enough, that he is too overpowered, that he basically has all the bloody powers, that he is an alien god not human, or that he is simply to vanilla, but for me that is just not the case the guy is more human than batman in the sense that he has a family that he grew up with, he is a farmer's son not a billionaire like Bruce Wayne or Oliver Queen. His intentions are more pure than 'x' no. of superheroes looking to have revenge for their parents death, he chooses to care, to do good, to use his powers for the greater good not because he has suffered a tragedy but because he has good human values instilled by good parents. The point of him being overpowered goes out of the window when he has be beaten by Darksied, Doomsday, Zod, etc. & even Batman has beaten him several times. As far as being one dimensional goes the guy has a job, is a superhero, has a steady romance going unlike Mr. Forever Alone: Batman, even has a rich historic background of Krypton, has iconic villains, & to top it all has fortress of solitude. Even as a bad guy superman excels just checkout the Injustice storyline, & his re-imagination as son of Zod in Justice League: Gods & Monsters is really enjoyable.
Though I know it is true that his recent Hollywood entries of Superman Returns, Man of Steel, & Batman v Superman were not masterpieces by a long shot, but that doesn't mean the character himself is bad or has to be hated, it is more of a case of not making the movie rightly and doing the character justice rather than character not being good enough.Fans should not just blindly hate superman, while DC themselves are part of the problem as if something is not working they should not just put all their eggs in the batbasket & leave everyone else as a side act.
To me this quote from the Justice League Unlimited perfectly sums up Superman's situation from the man himself:
"I feel like I live in a world made of cardboard. Always taking constant care not to break something. To break someone. Never allowing myself to lose control, even for a moment, or someone could die" - Superman to Darksied before beating the crap out of him.
So let us all take a moment and appreciate this great character while hoping that he starts to get some more love from its maker i.e. DC Comics and again becomes the center of the content that it is putting out.
PS: I love Batman more than Superman but at this moment there is simply too much love for batman and not nearly enough for dear old Supes.
