Real Humiliation: Remembering 27th October 2009

"We hope our fans can forgive us after this defeat." -Manuel Pellegrini told the Marca

While many Madridstas wont remember, or wont want to remember the date 27th October 2009 but it is a date that all of us Madridstas should remember as it is pretty easy to forget what makes the success that Real Madrid are currently enjoying after successfully retaining the Champions League so much sweet and what mistakes we had made so we make sure and avoid them moving forward.
Humiliation, Ridiculously Historic
 were some of the headlines

Well without straying away much further and trying to be all philosophical let me get straight to what actually happened that day, that day Real Madrid traveled to AD Alcorcon one of the smaller teams of Madrid, at that time playing in Segunda B (third tier) of Spanish Football, with a new set of Galacticos bought in by Uncle Flo. It was matchday Round of 32 of Copa Del Rey that is generally an afterthought after Champions League and La Liga anyway so who cared, Right?
Well turns out Alcorcon cared and even Real Madrid's squad selection which consisted of our Legendary Captain Raul, Guti, Karim Benzema, Raul Albiol, Arbeloa, Rafael van der Vaart, & Ruud van Nistelrooy seemed to show that they cared too. It was supposed to be a straight forward cup tie that was seemingly being taken seriously by the coach Manuel Pellegrini, especially since just the year before Real had exited the competition against another Segunda B team Real Oviedo. What followed was one of the most embarrassing night of football for Real Madrid and all of it's millions of fans across the globe. Real not just lost the match by a goal or two they were humiliated 4-0, yes thats right the current Champions of Europe lost to a third division team 4-0 in Madrid (not at The Bernabue).

I remember questioning the meaning of life that night as most of Football fans seem to do after a soul crushing defeat. What I had witnessed was not just a thrashing by all conquering bloody Barcelona or even another European Giant like Liverpool (4-0 at Anfield still hurts) it was total annihilation by a team no one ever considered a threat. What followed after that result was another exit from the Copa at hands of third tier team who celebrated joyously at The Bernabeu when they actually qualified for the next round in the return leg that Madrid could only win 1-0, seeds of Pellegerini's eventual exit at the end of the season were sown, & a realisation was made that no team not even the Mighy Real Madrid can take any single match as a forgone conclusion.

Therefore, in week when Real just found out that they will face another Madrid based third tier team Fuenlabrada at the Fernando Torres (their stadium is named after the player, & no he did not play for them) we should remember that no match is won until it is infact won on the pitch and that before we got to be the first team to retain the almighty Champions League we were kind of shit(Even if just for a few years).
HALA MADRID!
